  1. We were mostly cloudy last night but I did see the reddish sky when the clouds would open. It wasn't awe inspiring but it was enough to say I saw the northern lights in VT. It seems it was quite the show in some of the southern states. Has anyone heard of any electronic damage from last night's storm? I didn't find any crashed satellites in my front yard this morning.
  2. I found this on X. This is on the Atlantic Side. Earlier I saw a picture from the Gulf in Alabama. I won't be surprised if we see a picture from Cuba at some point.
  3. I'm seeing some pictures on Twitter of the northern lights all the way down at the Gulf of Mexico. It seems this solar storm was an overperformer.
  4. My mom just sent me a picture of the northern lights from Alabama. Crazy night!!!!
  5. Awesome!!! Are your kids enjoying it? This has been quite an exciting spring for them with a total eclipse, getting to tour the hurricane plane and now seeing the northern lights.
  6. The northern light forecast has me in the red but we have clouds. It looks like it is clearer to our north so I may take a little drive later. It would be really cool to see the northern lights and a total solar eclipse within 5 weeks of each other.
  7. What is "3 phase power"?
  8. I'm wondering if I should power down all my electronics before it reaches earth. I'm kinda flying blind here.
  9. NOAA just updated their K Index. Not sure what this means either.
  10. I got this from the NOAA space weather page but not sure what it means. To prepare for a snow storm I make sure to gas up the snowblower and summer storms I make sure the chain saw will crank. I'm not sure what to do for solar storms.
  11. This is such a great video. It had me reliving the moment. One of the clips of her right before totality show mosquitos flying all around her head. That was the same thing that happened to us. We were swarmed by mosquitoes right at the same time. My first thought when it went total was, "Oh My God", I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I then gave the eclipse a slow clap then took a sip of my Corona beer while watching the corona. I then told my wife I could see why people long ago would start throwing virgins in the volcano if something like this happened and you weren't expecting it. Thanks for posting this video. This is the best one I've seen.
  12. This is super helpful. I went back and looked at the past years and it tended to be very cloudy on August 12. If I remember correctly, there is a coastal range that trapped the clouds along the coast that were coming off of the Bay of Biscay. I will need to look on driving south through the mountains and that area seems a lot less cloudy on August 12. It will give me something to think about over the next 2+ years.
  13. Nicaragua was pretty dangerous. I got a chance to bribe the cops and also pay someone to keep my rental car safe while I shopped. However, we did get to see up close sea turtles laying their eggs on the beach ( our escorts were carrying machine gun though). We also spent part of the day on a beautiful beach and we were the only people out there. The volcano was really cool but the country needs to be a little safer before I visit again. My wife picked the trip because she said it was supposed to be like Costa Rica without the tourists. We found out why the tourists stay away, and I don't blame them.
  14. I've talked to many people over the last week that viewed the eclipse here in northern VT and not one of them said they were underwhelmed with what they saw. Everybody agrees it was amazing to see and some have mentioned about traveling in the future to experience a total solar eclipse once again. Someone on here said seeing the eclipse at 99% and not moving into the path of totality is like going to Disney World and not leaving the parking lot. I think that sums it up quite well.
  15. If you want to see a volcano, there is a volcano in Nicaragua that you drive up and has a parking lot at the rim. They say you can see lava but I didn't see it when I was there. However, I didn't do the hike around the rim. The sulfur gas smell was very strong and there is a sign telling you to back into the parking space in case you need to leave quickly. https://www.thoroughlytravel.com/central-america/how-to-visit-masaya-volcano-national-park-nicaragua-thorough-travel-guide/
