World Record Rainfall - 1942 Smethport PA

Recommended Posts

Pennsylvania, with its vast number of waterway and watersheds (second largest drainage basin East of the Mississippi) is well known for horrific flooding. Johnstown twice, Agnes and her inundating record rainfall, just two examples

Did you know that the tiny town of Smethport PA holds a world record for rainfall? It's true. A whopping 30 INCHES of RAIN fell in =<6hours in July 1942.

YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT!! THIRTY INCHES OF RAIN essentially within the span of one summer's afternoon. Training thunderstorm along a stalled front conspired to make this record. Yes, that is a WORLD record.
