They would have had absolutely no warning. And there were many colonists and natives living right where the worst of it would have been. And since they were from England, they've never seen a hurricane before. So imagine what they were thinking what kind of storm was this. I looked it up and it seems that hurricanes back in the 1600's didn't come up this way until this one in 1635. Not sure about tropical storms.
