SPC's talking about an uptick in activity in the risk for more supercells in the coming hours

   Mesoscale Discussion 2038
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0703 PM CST Wed Dec 14 2022

Areas affected...portions of the Florida panhandle southwest Georgia
   and southern Alabama

   Concerning...Tornado Watch 589...

   Valid 150103Z - 150300Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 589 continues.

SUMMARY...The severe threat is forecast to gradually increase across
western Florida and southern AL over the next couple of hours.
Damaging gusts and a few tornadoes will be possible. Additional
supercells may move onshore from the northern Gulf later this
   evening.

DISCUSSION...Across the FL Panhandle and southern AL, convection has
increased in coverage and intensity over the last hour with a few
supercells showing sustained low-level rotation. Short-term model
guidance suggests this trend will likely continue as the axis of the
low-level jet shifts eastward with the main shortwave trough
tonight. Area VAD/VWPS already hint at a 10-15 kt strengthening in
the wind fields showing increasing shear in the lowest 2-3 km.
Regional IR satellite trends also suggest deepening convection in
the northern Gulf, ahead of the main convective line further west,
may also evolve into supercells as it moves onshore in the next
couple of hours. With the moist, unstable (~1000 J/kg MLCAPE) and
strongly sheared environment already favorable for supercells (ESRH
250+ m2/s2), additional storms and increasing deep-layer shear
suggest an uptick in the risk for supercells capable of damaging
gusts and a few tornadoes in the next couple of hours.

2 classic discrete supercells. One north east of Destin, the other south of Tallahassee. Currently trying to fall asleep so who knows when that’ll happen

~100 mile difference between the two so the Tallahassee cell could go on for hours as long as it stays discrete. Can’t imagine it would die off on its own since it’s in the warm sector and better forcing is approaching. I hope I won’t be awake to find out.

We’ve confirmed the southwest supercell here produced 2 brief tornadoes based on spotters confirmation/pictures. The first tornado happened 3 mins after this screen grab… the second was about 20 minutes later.

There were no reports of damage from the first tornado, but the second one was pictured over a road from a distance that had a power line but there are no reports of downed power lines.

As it says, we strongly suspect this supercell produced more than 2 tornadoes based on radar/cyclic nature of the supercell but we have no proof or confirmation from spotters, obviously no reports of damage either.

There were 6 tornado warnings from this event, and I guess someone was keeping tabs this year and apparently the office had only issued 6 tornado warnings until that event. So, half of the tornado warnings in 2022 in the panhandles came on a single day in December. Another Meteorologist started 2 weeks before I did, and he’s from Dallas. I joked that we’re responsible for this event, considered highly anomalous here, and the spring is gonna be a record breaker

...NWS Damage Survey for 12/12/222 Tornado Event...

.Overview...A vigorous upper level storm system crossing the
plains combined with very strong wind shear and modest instability
to create an environment capable of supporting supercell
tornadoes and isolated tornadoes during the evening hours across
the northeast texas and eastern Oklahoma Panhandle. One supercell
generated at least 2 brief tornadoes which did not produce
damage, but were documented with video and photographs by storm
chasers a few residents in the area.

damage reported to the power lines that the tornado crossed along
the highway and no other damage indicators along the path which
remained in open grassland areas, the tornado was rated an EF0.
The track and width were estimated based on eye witness reports,
radar signatures and photographs.

Do we have a preliminary report of the account tornado count as of this morning?

That one north of Destin caught me off guard. Have some family down there but they were reporting that they were safe.

storm reports plotted for all NWS offices that had severe weather reports (not snowy). Sub-58mph wind reports and sub-1.00" hail may be included, along with floods, waterspouts, rain reports

Definitely not surprised severe storms/tornado warnings popped off around DFW. Classic loaded gun sounding.

Sooo.... 15 tornadoes resulted from this sounding

60 tornadoes have been confirmed so far, and I think they’re still surveying. Total of 111 tornado reports right now.

This would be a far more newsworthy if we didn’t just have the 2 largest December tornado outbreaks in recorded history last year.

So now the top-3 December tornado outbreaks have happened in 2021 and 2022
